10 Most Divisive Movies Of 2017

2. Justice League

In a way, Justice League being hugely divisive didn't come as much of a surprise.

In fact, division was baked into its DNA; the film suffered a director switch-up midway through production, and though the mandate was to ensure the film felt cohesive and whole, there were always going to be fans who wanted a full Snyder movie, and those who wanted a pure Whedon effort.

And this is exactly what happened upon the film's release. Some fans began begging Warner Bros to release the original, untouched "Zack Snyder Cut" (going so far as to create a petition), while others loved the apparent touches Whedon brought to the table, like the quips and incredibly likeable characters.

Justice League was also unable to lose the stench of the lambasted Batman V Superman and the disappointing Suicide Squad, and as a result, fans spoke with their wallets. The movie failed to crack $100 million in its domestic opening (which was once thought impossible) and in North America, will wind up being the lowest grossing earner in the DCEU.

All this is in the face of some people praising the lighter tone and remaining hopeful for the future of DC's Cinematic Universe. Justice League does have its fans, but money (or lack thereof) talks, and these numbers are not good.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
