8. Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel received broadly positive reviews from most critics, though the consensus also held that it didn't really elevate itself beyond being a familiar, straight-forward superhero origin story: entertaining, but relatively forgettable.

Nevertheless, many praised it for finally giving the Marvel Cinematic Universe its first female-led effort, as well as some of the more unexpected storytelling choices - namely the decision to make the Skrulls heroic - and the fun banter between Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson.

While the film's pre-release "controversy" proved just how many bitter men were never going to give the film a chance, there were plenty of genuine grievances to have with the movie, namely the visually rough direction, Larson's oddly stilted performance at times, and that Nick Fury twist.

Though it went on to gross $1.128 billion worldwide, Captain Marvel fell out of the cultural conversation insanely fast, and that ultimately speaks to how few people truly loved it.

For many, it was just "OK," and for anyone already long-tired of formulaic MCU origin stories, it wasn't even that.
