Adapting Andrei Tarkovsky's original adaptation of Solaris, an introspective and critically adored film of its time, was a daunting task for Steven Soderbergh and his 2002 film was met with a divided reception from critics and audience alike.

The original Solaris, which debuted in 1972, followed hot on the heels of 2001: A Space Odyssey and while it is not revered to the same extent as Kubrick's sci-fi epic it is still an important film in 20th century science fiction. The decision to remake what is considered by many critics to be a perfect film was met with a huge amount of cynicism from the offset and may have turned some against the remake before they had even seen a single frame of it.

Despite receiving generally positive reviews from some critics - with one BBC movie review calling it "one of the finest films since 2001: A Space Odyssey" - it received a smattering of negative feedback including being branded by the Observer as "a fiasco of infuriating pretentiousness and numbing incoherence". Despite the star power of George Clooney as the lead the film was ultimately a box office bomb and achieved a low 59% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

An avid cinephile, love Trainspotting (the film, not the hobby), like watching bad films ironically (The Room, Cats) and hate my over-reliance on brackets (they’re handy for a quick aside though).
