6. Primer

Perhaps the Tenet of its time, Primer was considered by many an impenetrable mess of a film with its attempts to explain the science behind time travel while adamantly refusing to dumb any of it down for an audience.

While it was accused of being "off-putting", "confusing" and "unengaging" it was also lauded for its originality and tackling of complex ideas on an incredible $7,000 budget - an almost unheard of amount to make a movie on even for independent cinema. Considering its incredibly niche subject matter (the exact science of time travel) and its limited theatrical release it is no surprise that it went under the radar of most cinemagoers.

While by no means a mainstream success - with its reliance on rapid fire technical jargon and lack of star power - it did receive some attention from certain sectors of the film industry. In the 2004 Sundance Film Festival it received the Grand Jury Prize, has subsequently attracted a cult following since its debut and is frequently cited as a testament to economic filmmaking on a budget.

An avid cinephile, love Trainspotting (the film, not the hobby), like watching bad films ironically (The Room, Cats) and hate my over-reliance on brackets (they’re handy for a quick aside though).
