2. High Life

High Life may be the ultimate example of an arthouse film disguised as science fiction (or vice versa) with a slow methodical plot, beautiful bold colours and emotionally complex characters who make us question if they are protagonists or antagonists at every turn.

This film from critically adored French filmmaker Claire Denis focuses on a group of criminals serving a sentence on a ship heading to the outer reaches of the solar system led by Robert Pattinson. Similar to Annihilation this 2018 film was deemed a highbrow example of science fiction which managed to win over critics with its musing over what makes us human and its harkening back to 1970s art-house science fiction.

However, despite currently enjoying a critical approval of 82% on the Tomatometer it scored exactly half of that number with a fairly pitiful audience score of 41%. Its - at times - glacial place of storytelling, controversial unapologetic nudity and philosophical musings proved too much for the majority of theatregoers. While High Life may have managed to appease the highbrow crowd it ruffled a few feathers with its mixture of the lowbrow 'sex machine' (watch the film, seriously) and uncomfortable depiction of attempted rape and an unconsensual insemination scene.

An avid cinephile, love Trainspotting (the film, not the hobby), like watching bad films ironically (The Room, Cats) and hate my over-reliance on brackets (they’re handy for a quick aside though).
