10 Most Eerily Disturbing Still Shots From Horror Movies

7. Norman / Mother - Psycho (1960)

The daddy, or, if you prefer, mummy of modern horror came from the masterful Alfred Hitchcock with the censor-baiting Psycho at the very start of the '60s. It was made, much like The Blair Witch Project, on a shoestring budget due to Hitchcock's studio Paramount having absolutely no faith in the project. They couldn't have been more wrong with the tale of motherly love gone awry becoming the benchmark by which all horror movies that followed were judged and, largely, found wanting. If Hitch hadn't traumatised us enough with the shower scene, Janet Leigh's unconventionally early departure and the Big Reveal he decided to superimpose Norman Bates' mother's mummified skull over his insane, grinning face at the movie's close - but just for a fraction of a second. This one, if anything, works better as a freeze frame - a mad, murder-eyed death's head accentuated by a rictus grin suddenly filled with a skeleton's jagged teeth. And you get to look at it for as long as you can stand. It's alright if you need a breather before we go on to number 6...
