8. Jason Lunges From The Depths - Friday The 13th (1980)
In a shock ending that aped the classic 'Carrie' (1976) last minute grab from the grave, we saw what could only be poor little Jason Voorhees emerge from Crystal Lake to ravage Friday The 13th's sole survivor, Alice (played with naive excellence by Adrienne King). The sequence is a stunner - the zombie-like child upsets a scene of absolute tranquility, destroying the calm after the storm of his mother's murder rampage and calling into question whether Jason is really dead at all (something a bazillion sequels would answer pretty firmly). Yet the still is unequivocally effective - Alice, the damaged innocent, floating on a serene lake, absolutely unaware of the blur of horrifying flesh launching itself directly at her. A chilling snapshot of true horror.
