10 Most Embarrassing Fake Accents In Movie History

2. Dick Van Dyke - Mary Poppins

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te_Nv3lMUnA No list of this kind would really be complete without including what is arguably the most famous "bad accent" in movie history: Dick Van Dyke, playing "cockney geezer" Burt in Disney's Mary Poppins, where he employs an accent so ridiculous, it's like he woke up one day, run onto the set, and said: "Here's an unspecific accent I made up for this role! It is based on nothing! I am a cat!" Yet here's an accent so awful that he kind of gets away with it. As a kid, anyway, I didn't see a problem with ol' Dick's attempt at "soundin' lun-dun", though I probably didn't even know what accent he was supposed to be doing back then, and was impressed with the funny voice he had adopted. In retrospect, it's horribly embarrassing. Like, really embarrassing. Like, two notches below "drunk American man attempts mock-cockney accent after eight beers." No offense, drunken Americans. I'm sure some of you do great cockney accents.
