No one expected to be subjected to this emotional turmoil this early into the film, but Up deserves for the top of this list for just how powerful and moving its married life montage was depicted.

After the adorable scene showing how Carl and Ellie met and how much Paradise falls means to the two of them, we watch a montage of their married life together. It’s full of adorable mishaps and staple moments of growing up, such as buying a house and preparing for a family. However, watching Ellie and Carl discover the sadness of their inability to have children was a devastating blow, but what’s even sweeter about it is how they continued to have a happy life together, up to Ellie’s sad death, which left Carl alone.

Many movies start with the death of a loved one, but the opening scenes of Up paints Ellie so authentically that her absence is felt throughout the entire film.
