7. When She Loved Me – Toy Story 2

‘When She Loved Me’ marked the first of Pixar’s devastating montages and really, we should have known what was to come for the future. The montage begins with the happiness Jesse felt with her owner Emily, mirroring the loving relationship Woody and Andy share. However, Jesse’s story with Emily ends when the inevitable happens, Emily outgrows and abandons her.

The long passage of time showing Jesse lost under the bed with all other memories of their time together is impossible not to well up for. And Pixar continues to toil with us with another blow. Emily, all grown up find Jesse under the bed and takes her in a car ride, just like she had when she was a child. Jesse is hopefully, her eyes gleaming at the chance of being played with again, however, Emily only found her to give her away for good, leaving her in a cardboard box and driving away, leaving Jesse and the audience heartbroken.

Makes you wonder if all the toys you gave away felt the same distress.
