9. Angharad's Unexpected Death - Mad Max: Fury Road

Although the 2015 version of Mad Max is mostly a flash grenade of adrenaline, metal-grinding, ear-blasting insanity wrapped up in cinematography that depicts it all as a surreal painting come to life, there are some elements of real human emotion squeezed into it. For instance, the relationship between Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron has incredibly affecting moments. As does Max's begrudging bonds with The Wives, Nux, and, well, pretty much everyone he encounters throughout the film. Most of the tearjerking scenes involve small things: Max finally telling Furiosa his name, the small hand gesture made by the Vuvalini when they grieve a major loss, Nux whispering to Capable to "witness me" during his heroic sacrifice. But the big one comes from the death of Angharad. And it's just one terrible moment right after the other. Just after seemingly escaping death by protruding boulder, she hangs off the side of the rig being driven by Max. It looks like a narrow miss. Then she slips - because of a gunshot wound given to her earlier by Max, and suddenly falls. And then she's run over. The other wives beg Max to turn around. He doesn't. He can't. Oh, and also, she was pregnant. The baby doesn't survive. Heart, meet floor.
