10 Most Emotionally Devastating Movie Moments Of 2015
8. The Crops Are Destroyed - The Martian
Man stranded in space. It sounds like it could be the recipe for a hopeful, heroic film with a tough-fought happy ending. But... there's always a chance for heartbreak. Cast Away proved how emotionally draining these stories of a marooned man can be, and 127 Hours laid the groundwork for how to suddenly, almost enthusiastically pull the rug out from underneath the main character after giving him a glimmer of hope. The Martian gives us that rug pull and then relentlessly kicks sand in his eyes immediately afterward. Matt Damon's character, after coming to grips with the fact that he's temporarily stranded, takes solace in the fact that he's managed to grow some basic crops to sustain himself for the long days ahead. So far, so good. At least we know this guy isn't going to die of starvation while waiting for a miraculous rescue. But because that would be too satisfying for the audience, the habitat he's growing these potato crops in basically explodes, effectively killing off most of his food supply. The look on Matt Damon's face when he discovers this is equivalent to that of a child who just witnessed, in gruesome detail, his dog being run over. By his parents. Who had just stuffed the car full of their belongings and drove off, abandoning their kid. With nothing but said dog to keep him company. AND IT WASN'T EVEN DAMON'S FAULT!
