4. Gerda Tries To Speak To Her "Husband" - The Danish Girl
Transgender "issues" have been in the spotlight pretty heavily this year, with Caitlyn Jenner kicking off a very publicised discussion about the rights of transgender persons. And though it would have been easy for The Danish Girl to pander to the more popular parts of this debate, instead, it looks at the part of it that those in the media don't typically focus on: the people in relationships with transgender persons. Lili (played to the hilt by Eddie Redmayne) is obviously the central character of The Danish Girl, as she is a sort of transgender pioneer in the story. But her partner, Gerda (Alicia Vikander), steals the show as the emotionally confused spectator of Lili's groundbreaking procedure. She's mostly supportive throughout, but her eyes betray a constant haziness, a profound befuddlement of her own role in the relationship. But when that confusion leads to panic that she may have lost the relationship that once comforted her, Gerda reaches out to Lili's old self, beggingher to speak to her husband one last time, it's a frightening look at the unspoken side of the transgender process. Because her husband isn't exactly "gone," but to her, he's just not there anymore. And there's no getting him back.
