Even as a child, Tom Marvolo Riddle took pleasure in causing misfortune. He routinely terrorised the other children at his orphanage, often stealing their possessions in the process. As an adolescent he opened the Chamber of Secrets, murdered his father, stole his uncle’s ring, and even created two horcruxes.

Politically, as with Grindelwald before him, Voldemort envisioned a world where wizards and witches ruled over muggles, and in line with his Slytherin ancestors, he also placed great emphasis on the purity of blood (despite not being a pure-blood wizard himself).

As the main antagonist of the series, Voldemort’s pursuit of immortality and power leads to an extensive list of schemes and murders, none of which he feels even an ounce of remorse for.

Though subverting the expected seems to have become a recent trend, it’s safe to say that fans of the series were more than happy with Harry’s ultimate defeat of Voldemort in The Deathly Hallows. It may have been predictable, but it was also highly satisfying.
