9. Ivan Vanko Self-Destructs
Tony Stark has made his fair share of enemies over the years, and Ivan Vanko is one of the most dangerous.
Played by Mickey Rourke in 2010's disappointing Iron Man 2, Vanko is the son of the man who helped Howard Stark create the Arc Reactor technology. Angry at the Stark's for his criminal father being deported, and Tony seemingly living off of his father's creation, Ivan swears revenge, and creates his own suit, as well as an army of drones, using technology provided by Justin Hammer in an attempt to take down Iron Man.
Attacking Iron Man and War Machine at the Stark Expo, Whiplash and his army of drones are eventually defeated by the two heroes, but in one last attempt to destroy Stark for good, he sets the drones, as well his own suit, to self-destruct, causing a huge explosion that wipes out almost the entire Expo.
Vanko may not have brought Tony Stark to his knees, but by destroying himself to try and kill Iron Man in the process, he proved that he is just as deranged as any villain in the MCU; willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to get his revenge.
