A man who desires worldwide domination, The Red Skull has long been Captain America's greatest enemy, making him the only logical choice to oppose Cap in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger.

Brought to life on-screen by Hugo Weaving, The Red Skull desires superiority over all mankind, and aims to eventually control the world. He's basically Hitler 2.0.

In an attempt to gain that superiority, Schmidt underwent a procedure that saw him injected with an incomplete version of the serum which would eventually give Captain America his power. While he became physically deformed from the procedure, The Red Skull see's himself as the perfect human specimen, and wants no-one else to share his power.

As such, when Dr Erskine, the creator of the Super-Soldier Serum, looks to perfect his creation with Steve Rogers, Schmidt has him unceremoniously assassinated, hoping to preserve the secrets of the serum for himself.

Through his desire to be the ultimate human being, Schmidt murders an innocent man who simply wants to help protect the world. While an attack on a super-powered hero is by no means justified, assassinating a helpless man shows the levels that The Red Skull will sink to, in order to achieve his goals.
