8. Introducing Deadpool (X-Men Origins: Wolverine)
20th Century FoxThe X-Men franchise has garnered its fair share of critical acclaim, which makes X-Men Origins: Wolverine the black sheep of the family, more so even than The Last Stand. It was poorly plotted and Wolverines claws looked cheaper than in his debut, but one of its most heinous crimes in the eyes of comic book fans was its mistreatment of Deadpool. Even those who had never read about the Merc with a Mouth could appreciate that a silent and nigh invincible villain with no agency of his own is far less interesting than, say, Magneto or Mystique, but the loss of Deadpools humour and irreverence was particularly devastating because of this first excellent scene. Wade rambles endlessly in the lift despite the pleas of his teammates while goons assemble at the teams destination, but as the doors open he tells the others to get back and prepares his katanas. What follows is a stylish demonstration of Wades superhuman reflexes; he deflects every bullet back to its origin point as he rushes down the centre of the room. After that scene, the proposed Deadpool standalone film seemed perfectly plausible. Whats not to like? By the end of the movie, it was abundantly clear that Deadpools big screen stardom began and ended with Origins. We can only hope that hell be back someday.
