A horror film can often be defined as good if the characters inside of them are given the run around by the plot and script. Nothing holds the audience's attention more than seeing someone put through the wringer.

Horror movies that capitalise on the exhaustion of their main and supporting characters will always have a special place in the hearts of horror fans that enjoy seeing the development these individuals are forced through in order to survive the film. At the end of the day, if the character did not have a certain degree of difficulty to cope with then their survival instinct would surely not kick in?

Some characters that survive multiple adaptations and sequels of - let's face it - rehashed franchises really are living proof of the phrase 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger'. However they should also add 'ridiculously exhausted' onto the end of that!

It's not just returning characters though, sometimes those seen in standalone films can exude just as much strength and exhaustion as these other well-seasoned horror movie protagonists!

So, have a look at these entries and see which you think is the most exhausted!

10. Paxton - Hostel

Hostel (2005) is a film by Eli Roth that helped define the subgenre of aptly dubbed 'torture-porn' movies. The plot of the movie as a whole is very weak and is very much a product of its time with the first two thirds of the film having nothing in the way of really belonging to the horror genre. It is characterised by its overuse of nudity and narcotics as a group of college students find themselves in Amsterdam.

Once the actual plot of the film gets going, which is a good hour or so into the movie, the torture that ensues is completely worth the wait for any avid 'torture-porn' horror fan!

The individual that survives until the very end of the movie is Paxton, and he undoubtedly is the most exhausted person in this film. After enduring the torture at the hands of twisted individuals, seeing his friends mutilated dead bodies, and finally having to cut off a woman's eyeball in order to escape the clutches of his kidnappers, Paxton certainly gives any horror more protagonist a good run for their money!
