Ari Aster's visionary mind graced our screens once again in 2019 with Midsommar after his directorial debut Hereditary (2018) was a success among regular cinephiles as well as the hard-to-please seasoned horror fans. After relying heavily on dark lighting and eery soundscapes in Hereditary, Aster turned his attention more toward the more lighter setting of the Midsummer celebrations of Sweden.

Florence Pugh's character Dani is the protagonist and final girl of this psychological horror that subverts your expectations of just how far a film can go to discomfort its audience. Immediately when the audience meets Dani she is struggling to cope with the surmounting pressure of her bipolar sister's unpredictable actions. She is thrust into the aftermath of her sister committing a murder-suicide of her parents, and this allows the audience to understand just how uncaring and distant her boyfriend, Christian, is.

Dani accompanies her boyfriend and his college friends to Sweden where they are all planning on getting involved with a particular community's traditions during the midsummer festival. It very much turns gruesome very quickly, and Dani now not only has to still deal with the trauma of her sister, mother and father's deaths, but also must face the insanity the community imposes.
