10 Most Expensive Horror Movies Ever Produced

3. I Am Legend - $150 Million

World War Z
Warner Bros.

Still one Will Smith's most famous roles even thirteen years after its initial release, I Am Legend is the story of one man and his german shepherd best friend attempting to survive a post-apocalyptic world. The film shows the aftermath of a virus that was initially meant to cure cancer being released across the world, with Smith's character Robert Neville the sole survivor in New York city.

Whilst most still haven't fully come to terms with or forgiven Warner Bros. for the fate of Sam, I Am Legend was one of the 2000s most acclaimed films. Will Smith's portrayal of Neville was superb (winning a Saturn Award in 2008) and netted him a cool $25 million, and the quality of the film's visual effects, stunt choreography and handling of deep and sombre tones were also singled out by critics.

Despite being regarded as a risky punt by some at Warner Bros. prior to its release, I Am Legend would go onto set an opening record for a December release, practically unheard of for a film with horror elements, and registered a box office haul of $585.3 million.
