10 Most Expensive Horror Movies Ever Produced

4. The Wolfman - $150 Million

World War Z
Universal Pictures

The 1941 version of The Wolfman is one of the most important movies ever released, influencing the ways in which lycanthropy and supernatural beings were portrayed on the big screen going forward. The classic Curt Siodmak and George Waggner story would spawn four sequels and, eventually, a remake in 2010.

Directed by Joe Johnston, The Wolfman boasts one of the most impressive cast of actors imaginable with the likes of Benicio del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving all starring. Revolving around the story of an actor who is bitten by a werewolf and goes on a series of mad rampages, The Wolfman has gone down in horror history as one of the biggest bombs ever. Roundly panned by critics for its lack of suspense or chills, it was even dismissed by Universal Studios president Ronald Meyer as being "one of the worst movies we ever made." The film only made $140 million against its $150 million budget, resulting in it being branded one of the most expensive mistakes Universal ever made, as well as being one of its worst in terms of quality.

The part budget that went into doing the effects of Lawrence Talbot's was at least well spent, with The Wolfman winning an Oscar for Best Makeup.
