10 Most Frightening Moments In Film History

1. Mulholland Drive - The Monster Behind The Winkie's Parking Lot

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzWDzGxqqa0 There is no other scene in any movie that has scared me as much as this one. David Lynch is known for giving his audiences terrifying images and scenes but this one takes the cake because it is so out of the ordinary, even for Lynch. It starts totally normal by having two men walking out to the back of the diner, Winkie's, since one of the men said he keeps having a dream where there is something in the alley. What follows is absolutely terrifying in just how unconventional it all is. Since Mulholland Drive is a David Lynch movie the audience is expecting something to be waiting in the alley but the expectation is that it will be more weird or strange than frightening. When the monster appears from behind a wall it is shocking because the lead up to it is so normal. There is no swelling musical cue and once it appears it's gone in a second. The way the sound cuts out also adds to the scare because it feels as if all of the air has been sucked straight out of the room leaving a disturbing quietness. The look of the monster itself is the scenes greatest strength because it looks similar to a person but more like a disheveled and diseased person. This makes it seem like a dark reflection of society which perfectly fits the themes of Mulholland Drive and really David Lynch's entire career as well. Thanks so much for reading and I'd love to hear any moments that have frightened you over the years.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
