You never know fully what they're going to do next and there is no better example of this than There Will Be Blood's dynamic protagonist Daniel Plainview. Plainview is one of the best villains in cinematic history and a man who has so much hate built up for every other person that he comes across as very frightening in many moments during There Will Be Blood. The most intense moment, however, comes at the end of the film when Eli comes to sell his family out and benefit from their losses during the Great Depression. Daniel is in a state of disarray and truly has nothing left to live for since his adopted son is now, in his eyes, only competition in the oil business. There is nothing that Daniel hates more than competition and Eli is his most hated opponent. Eli also comes to him as a faux friend which only incurs the wrath of Daniel even more. The scene is very frightening but also very degrading towards Eli since Daniel basically treats him like a child. The whole film has been leading to a clash between the two and, as Daniel murders Eli, the blood that was promised in the title is spilled all over Daniel's floor. What really makes the scene frightening is the terror in Daniel's voice when he mutters the immortal insult "You're just the afterbirth Eli, slithered out of your mother's filth."
