Boromir is a tough character to size up and truly understand, because the Ring had such an incredible influence over him. He was willing to travel with Frodo and the Fellowship, but even just the sight of the Ring corrupted his mind.

Even at the Council of Elrond, Boromir was preaching to use the powerful weapon to destroy their enemies, and didn't care for the arguments from wiser men than he, strongly forbidding it. He would have taken the Ring from Frodo before they even delved into the Mines of Moria if it wasn't for Aragorn snapping him out of it.

Eventually, Boromir's mind was overtaken by the power of the Ring, and he turned vicious. He attacked Frodo and tried to take the Ring from him, forcing the Hobbit to use it and become invisible, endangering everyone. This was one thing, but Galadriel had already warned Frodo about such a thing happening before they even left Lothlórien.

Boromir did redeem himself ultimately, as he bravely and honourably saved the Hobbits from a swarm of Orcs, sacrificing his life in the process, but it is hard to forget that he was always jealous and selfish, and the image of him attacking Frodo is something that is burned into fans' minds forever.
