Gollum is one of the most intriguing, and deepest characters in the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy. He may be utterly obsessed with regaining his Precious after it was lost to Bilbo Baggins, but he was torn apart by an internal struggle between Sméagol and Gollum.

Sméagol was not so different from a Hobbit once upon a time, but his mind was corrupted the second he saw the Ring. He killed Déagol, and his transformation soon began. Years roaming Middle-earth and dwelling in caves and mountains changed him into the monster known as Gollum.

As Sméagol, now fighting with Gollum inside his own mind, he genuinely wanted to help Frodo, and he wanted to be loyal to his new master in spite of his reputation. He responded to the pity Frodo showed him after the words of Gandalf, and wanted to be good again. However, it was Gollum who stopped him.

The two were very different characters, as depicted by Peter Jackson's incredible directing talents in The Two Towers. It was Gollum and his lust for the Ring who further corrupted Sméagol, and lured Frodo into Shelob's lair.

It's easy to feel pity for Sméagol, but Gollum was truly evil.
