2. Wormtongue

Denethor Steward Of Gondor Death The Lord OF The Rings
New Line Cinema

Saruman may have been one of the greatest villains and most powerful threats to the forces of good in Lord of the Rings, but he wouldn't have been quite so formidable without Gríma Wormtongue by his side. His obedient servant was a slimy, pathetic excuse for a being, and almost brought Rohan to its knees.

Though it was by Saruman's hand, Wormtongue was by King Théoden's side in order to poison his mind, and banish Éomer and those loyal to the King, allowing his master to take control of the country. And what did he ask for in return for his betrayal? Riches? Glory?

No, he was promised Éowyn.

Creep.

Even after Gandalf drew Saruman from Théoden like poison from a wound, Wormtongue continued to serve the White Wizard.

It was his idea to have the Uruk-hai attack the people of Rohan as they made their way to Helm's Deep, taking advantage of the women and children they had with them, and it was he who alerted Saruman to the one weakness of the great stronghold.

There was no honour in Wormtongue, he was a cowardly, devious creep who would sell his soul (if he ever had one), for the promise of a woman who wouldn't look at him twice. Gandalf called him a witless worm, something that is hard to argue with.
