10 Most Hated Star Wars Characters
9. The Porgs
Though The Last Jedi marked a concerted effort by Rian Johnson to veer away from Star Wars' more cynical, sentimental trappings, the filmmaker did nevertheless include the most necessary of studio-mandated things - good 'ol merch-bait.
What is any Star Wars film without at least a character or two clearly included to sell dolls, figurines, and lunchboxes? George Lucas' prequels were absolutely full of mascot-type characters like this, and of course, who can forget the Ewoks?
The Last Jedi meanwhile has the Porgs, the puffin-like creatures which reside on the planet Ahch-To where Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) has exiled himself.
On one hand the Porgs are cute, but on the other they whiff of a studio calculation, as if Disney felt the film otherwise didn't have enough merchandisable new characters.
That may or may not be the case, but a large portion of the fanbase swiftly expressed their disdain for the creatures long before the movie was even released. That annoying screech the Porgs let out when distressed didn't help, either.
The only slight solace is that Johnson at least had the self-awareness to appreciate the possible backlash, depicting them throughout The Last Jedi as the mortal enemy of Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo), who even ends up roasting one for dinner, much to fans' delight.
