No MCU movie is ever truly a standalone movie. While the present is always incredibly important, every single outing has the task of teasing or laying the foundations for the future of the franchise in some way or another, sometimes to a fault.

This was the case in Avengers: Age of Ultron. There was already a lot going on, but the movie took a detour from Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against a killer AI programme to plant the seeds of Thor’s search for the Infinity Stones and subsequent path towards Ragnarok.

The only problem is that the scene that was supposed to be in the movie, explaining everything in a coherent and entertaining way (according to Joss Whedon), was essentially gutted for time purposes. What was left was simply Thor taking a very confusing swim in a cave with his friend nearby because it was apparently dangerous.

Age of Ultron is no one’s favourite movie for a plethora of reasons, and it would be unfair to place too much emphasis on this one scene. However, it stopped dead any momentum the story had picked up, only confused fans watching, and almost became a poster child for the problems with the Avengers sequel.
