10 Most Heartbreaking Sci-Fi Movie Moments
1. Patricide – Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens
Star Wars is, without a doubt, one of the most iconic sci-fi franchises of all time. Its reach is universal, and its characters have some of the most easily recognisable names in all of pop culture.
One such character is Han Solo, the sarcastic, self-interested captain of the Millennium Falcon that stole the show back in the Original Trilogy.
When a new trilogy of sequels was announced, we learned that our favourite galactic heroes would also be returning. Enter a much older Han Solo, still played by an aging Harrison Ford, to act as a mentor of sorts to Rey, a young scavenger turned Jedi prospect.
When Rey finds herself pitted against Kylo Ren - formerly Ben Solo, son of Han and Princess Leia - it becomes apparent that he's deeply conflicted between the light and the dark sides of the Force.
Han comes face to face with his estranged son, and extends his hand in love and forgiveness, only for Ren to brutally murder him. We all watched in horror as our childhood hero slid lifelessly away, cementing Ren as the villain that we'd hoped he wouldn't be.
