While Star Trek's original series may have run its course by the end of the '60s, its characters were brought back for a series of films in the decades that followed - films which have arguably surpassed the original series in popularity.

None of these films are better remembered by fans than 1982's Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, which saw Kirk, Spock and company face off once more against Khan Noonien Singh, a genetically engineered superman intent on getting revenge on the crew of the Enterprise for imprisoning him on a desolate planet years before.

Despite the crew's best attempts, Khan gets the upper hand, crippling the Enterprise's warp engines. Upon going to fix them, Spock learns that the engine room is flooded with radiation, and chooses to sacrifice himself in order to save the crew.

Maybe it's Spock's long and storied dedication to logical choices that makes it so touching, or maybe it's the impassioned speech that he gives as he succumbs to the radiation, but either way, it gave us goosebumps.
