8. We Are Groot – Guardians Of The Galaxy
Way back in the early days of Phase Two (also known as 2014), we were introduced to a band of misfits known as the Guardians of the Galaxy, and they stood out decidedly from the rest of the heroic MCU figures we'd come to love.
Yes, this band of opportunistic spacefarers were far from the idealistic messiah figures that most heroes seem to be, and this only served to endear them to audiences. Perhaps the most endearing of the bunch (depending on who you ask) is Groot, the sentient tree-like humanoid who speaks using only the words "I am Groot".
This is used to comic effect throughout the film, but its not until the climactic battle for the Power Stone that we realise just how much Groot has come to mean to the other guardians (and the audience).
When protecting his teammates from one of Ronan the Accuser's attacks, Groot manages to utter the words "We are Groot" before his (apparent) death.
It might not be the highest profile death, but its the love he has for his new friends that makes it all the more heartbreaking.
