8. Dumbo (1941)
I was born in 1988, so I have no idea what kind of things were going on before then, 'less I've read about it or seen pictures and stuff. Which is to say, there seems to have been certain time periods where everybody just went all out nuts. Whether drugs were involved or not I'm not sure, but I'm going to say that drugs were involved. And that, of course, brings us to Walt Disney's
Dumbo, a movie that is only ever terrifying from start to finish. When most people think of "weird"
Dumbo, they think of that Pink Elephant sequence, which could only ever have existed by way of the entire animation team simultaneously dropping LSD and drawing whatever formed suddenly in their new, connected hive mind. But
Dumbo, I think, is just disturbing in its entirety: there is something unmistakably spooky about its overall tone, and the way the characters interact with one another. There's just so much cruelty on display, it's horrific.
