7. Syndrome Gets The Chop - The Incredibles
Brad Bird's brilliant and near-perfect superhero deconstruction
The Incredibles is just as appealing for adults as it is for kids, though one might ultimately argue that it's aimed for a younger audience. I'd disagree, but you know, I've got an article to write here, so for that purpose alone, this is a kids' movie. Anyway, the bad guy in
The Incredibles is Syndrome, a normal guy lacking powers who longs to be the world's best superhero. He tries to achieve this by murdering all the actual superheroes in the world, which he almost does. Bad Syndrome. Being a villain, of course (and this being a movie made by Pixar), there's no way that such acts can remain unpunished, so the movie opts to... well, kill Syndrome. Villains being killed, even in Disney movies, isn't unheard of, of course, but it's the way that Syndrome goes out that I don't think people are really acknowledging properly. I mean, he gets his cloak caught in an airplane engine, and he gets sucked into it and chopped into pieces. Why are we, as a society, not more disturbed by that particular death method in a kids' movie?!
