Dr. Seuss is a legend for a reason. For decades now, his work has spread exuberant joy through generations of readers. And perhaps Seuss' best-known and most endearing creation is that of the Cat in the Hat.

In Seuss' original book, the Cat's design is a wondrously welcoming sight. Thanks to some soft, curved lines and a color palette and use that serves to highlight his expressive face, the Cat was a character who immediately became a favorite of readers both big and small.

Which is why the live-action version, played by Mike Myers is such a gross misstep. Gone are all of the design choices of Seuss' work and in their place is an obtuse design that's essentially just a giant cat with the face of Mike Myers.

At least with Seuss' other most famous creation, the Grinch, the live-action version had an excuse for being such an eyesore; the Grinch is a monstrous and ill-mannered character. But the Cat is supposed to be delightful and lovable. He's a teacher of morals and a figure the audience is meant to trust.

Yet, in the live-action version, his design is so off-putting that it undermines Seuss' entire point.
