10 Most Horrifying Urban Nightmare Movies
8. Pin
Mental illness is something that today’s society is incredibly aware of, despite the fact it never used to be. Despite being made in 1988, Pin is a movie about the horrors of mental illness and the strain it can have on family and relationships. It tells the story of a young man called Leon Linden whose father used an anatomically correct medical dummy to discipline and educate his children. Whilst Leon’s sister, Ursula, grew up reasonably unaffected by this strange form of parenting, Leon developed a form of schizophrenia where he is under the delusion that the doll is real and talking to him.
Pin is a film about childhood trauma and how seemingly miniscule events can shape a child’s life mentally as they grow older. The movie is firmly based in reality and shows the illogical extremes of those who suffer as well as the lives of those who suffer by proxy. Although this movie is primarily a psychological horror where things are exaggerated for effect, there’s no denying the important and emotive themes that the film pushes to the surface.
It’s a
scary film to experience, but it’s frightening in a realistic way as it shows
someone’s mental stability falling; receiving no help from those around
them. It’s both frightening, yet sad, especially the cruel climax and the
implications of such an event.
