Out of all the motives behind a slasher killer’s rampage, Dream Home has one of the strangest, yet one of the most relatable. Cheng Lai-Sheung, the protagonist and antagonist of the movie, murder the residents of an apartment building just so she can have a nice affordable place to live in Hong Kong. It’s a weirdly relatable reason for such an extreme measure.

Dream Home is a film that mixes horror and emotional drama in a way that’s not jarring, yet not entirely comfortable either. The movie finds ways for the audience to empathize with Lai-Sheung’s struggles, but detest her murder spree, leaving a viewer feeling empty and repulsed by her actions. However, the rising cost of affordable living is something we must all live with, and there may have been a few of us who have thought this very thing in the back of our minds before quickly dismissing the idea. The fact that something like this has can be realistically possible makes this movie all the more terrifying to witness.

Dream Home is quite the experience as far as movies go, with its original premise and experimental style it taps into an audience’s feelings whilst also horrifying them at the same time. However, the nightmare it tells is simply unforgettable, and the killer is one of the most realistically sympathetic slasher villains that cinema's ever featured.
