Don't be alarmed, thankfully The Snowman isn't an upcoming feature-length remake of that animated Christmas film with the sad music you used to watch as a kid, but instead the latest adaptation from iconic Scandinavian crime novelist, Jo Nesbø, which is enough to generate excitement even if nothing else about the film is revealed.

As you come to expect with the work of Nesbø, it's a story about a detective (who will undoubtedly have some demons of his own) searching for a missing woman. The title refers to the snowman that is wearing a scarf owned by said missing woman. I imagine the detective will turn up the central heating during interrogations.

As expected, the novel was praised by critics and fans of the author alike, but from a film perspective it's probably the director and cast that catches the eye.

Tomas Alfredson will be taking the helm, who is responsible for a number of incredible films, including Swedish romantic-horror vampire film, Let the Right One in, and Tinker, Tailer Soldier, Spy, which was based on another brilliant author's work, John Le Carré. The cast is made up of Michael Fassbender, who will portray the detective, and rounded off by Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, J. K. Simmons, and even boasts the long-awaited return of Val Kilmer to the big screen.

Expect to see arresting visuals, moody characters, and lots and lots of snow upon The Snowman's release in the second half of 2017.
