When George Lucas concluded his prequel trilogy for the Star Wars saga, it seemed the story was told. There were some mutterings online of a possible sequel trilogy to come after Return of the Jedi, but those were just rumors without any merit. Then, Lucas sold his franchise to Disney, and everything changed.

The studio made massive alterations to the Star Wars franchise by changing most of the books, comics, and video game content into "Legends," but an announcement soon came that Disney was developing some new movies. The rumors of a sequel trilogy were finally coming to pass, and the hype began to grow.

To say the new films were some of the most anticipated movies ever made would be a gross oversimplification. Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens was easily one of the most anticipated films of all time, and fortunately, it delivered on the hype.

The new characters and situations introduced in The Force Awakens took a lot of inspiration from the original film from 1977, and it worked immensely well. The film went on to gross more than $2 billion at the worldwide box office making it one of the most profitable films of the franchise. The hype was definitely there for The Last Jedi, but it paled in comparison to this first entry in the new trilogy.
