Peter Jackson's love note to J.R.R. Tolkien's magnum opus took the form of three hugely successful blockbuster films. It's safe to say the hype for the first two were well up there when compared to many of the other films on this list, but the final film, Return of the King, easily dwarfed those that came before in terms of hype.

It's not surprising to consider that the final chapter of an epic story would amass more hype than its predecessors. After all, the previous two films managed to rake in hundreds of millions of dollars, Academy Awards, and told a story that stands the test of time.

When Return of the King was set to release, the world had a year full of hype to build up excitement and flood the movie theaters when it finally came out. Pretty much everyone who went to see the movie was not only satisfied, the hype proved to be entirely warranted.

Return of the King managed to wow fans with its endearing conclusion to Tolkien's epic tale. It raked in an impressive $377 million at the box office and solidified the Lord of the Rings as one of the most successful film trilogies in history.
