10 Most Hyped Movies Of All Time (And How They Turned Out)

4. John Carter (2012)

Jar Jar Binks
Disney

John Carter had a lot going for it when Disney decided to finally bring the character to the big screen. Based on famed writer, Edgar Rice Burroughs' works, John Carter not only had a dedicated fanbase, but it also held the record for being in development longer than any other film in history.

Hollywood spent more than 70 years trying to get a movie made of John Carter and his associated characters, but it finally came to pass in 2012. 70 years can generate a lot of hype, and while the various projects that failed to materialize over the years weren't made into Disney's final product in 2012, they did establish a longtime desire for fans to see something... anything make it to the silver screen.

That much hype was sure to disappoint hardened fans who enjoyed reading Burroughs' books over the years. Unfortunately, the hype was unwarranted, and Disney's John Carter proved to be one of the worst financial blunders in film history.

The movie wasn't received well by critics or fans of the original books. It ended up costing Disney Studios a loss of $200 million, which made it one of the biggest financial disasters in the history of movie making.
