7. Rick Deckard - Blade Runner
The hazardous landscapes of Los Angeles 2019 didn’t quite come to fruition as Blade Runner predicted, but that doesn’t mean that it didn’t stay with us all these years later, and the focal point of the piece with it. Rick Deckard was a tired curmudgeon of a former cop, but his extra-marital affair was where the true interest in the character came to light.
Being one of the best Blade Runner’s in the LAPD, Deckard is tasked with chasing down four fugitive androids, who run rampant through the luminescent streets of Los Angeles after escaping a colony on Mars. Where any other android hunter may have had an absolute hatred for the robotic miscreants, Deckard’s humanity shines through in his hesitance to condemn them to death, even as he recites the rules and regulations regarding them.
Returning all these years later in the subsequent sequel in 2049, Deckard certified himself as a character we didn’t know we needed more of. His mournful attitude towards the past, brought that human touch to a very cold world.
