9. Happy Hogan
Jon Favreau did a fantastic job directing the first two Iron Man movies, and although Joss Wheadon did brilliantly with Avengers, Favreau was right to feel a little aggrieved not to be trusted with the first team up. In the end, Favreau didn’t even see out the trilogy, with Shane Black helming Iron Man 3. Without the weight of directorial responsibilities though, that gave him more space to show his acting chops.
In the first two Iron Man movies, Happy was an entertaining bit part without really adding much to the story. Seeing him slammed onto the mat by Black Widow told us a lot about her, but he was just there as the comic foil.
He had no real personality apart from being a bit stressed out by Tony. When Iron Man 3 rolled around, his neuroses were dialled to the max and he was much more comedic. Even his interest in Downton Abbey, while being a small change, really made him feel fleshed out.
The great job Iron Man 3 did in establishing this made it much easier for him to bounce off Spider-Man, a trend likely to continue in Far From Home.
