10 Most Insane Movie Leaks Ever
2. Deadpool
Okay, okay, this entry isn’t the same as an entire film being leaked onto the internet, but it still belongs on this list because of the effect it had on the film in question. A potential Deadpool movie was bounced around at Fox going all the way back to the year 2000. Ryan Reynolds was attached to the project as far back as 2001. After his appearance in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which deviated from the comic book version of the character and left many a fan angry, the Deadpool solo film was shelved. There was still public interest, though, so in 2011 special effects artist Tim Miller was hired to direct, with Reynolds still attached. Then Green Lantern happened. Fox put Deadpool on the backburner, yet again.
In 2012, Miller convinced Fox to give him money to put together some CGI test footage, on which he collaborated with Reynolds. He showed it to Fox, but they said ‘Hard pass.’ Then in 2014, the test footage mysteriously showed up online. The footage spread like wildfire across the internet. The praise was so enthusiastic that in less than 2 months time, Fox greenlit Deadpool with Reynolds and director Miller, allowing for it to be R-rated, with the caveat of not giving them a very big budget since it was such a huge gamble (comic book adaptations that are R-rated are very few, and seldom do they do well at the box office).
If this test footage had never leaked, not only would we not have the R-rated Deadpool movies, we also wouldn’t have the wonderful R-rated Logan. We still do not know who leaked the test footage, but rumors range from Reynolds and Miller to the less-obvious: an exec at Fox who just wanted to see how the internet would react.
Doesn’t it sound like something Deadpool himself would do...in fact, wouldn’t it be awesome if he just straight up admitted it during one of the films?
