3. Vice Almost Had A Musical Number

It feels like Adam McKay's Vice has been lined up for Oscar attention for so long now that nobody seemed to ever consider what might happen if it turned out to not actually be any good. That's perhaps a bit of an exaggeration, but for a presumed Oscar front-runner to land on 65% on RottenTomatoes is pretty tough going and it seems there are some pretty vocal critics of the film.

There are concerns over the tone, the structure and how much more clever it thinks it is than it actually is. It's a film that seems to present itself as an understated political satire with nuance and subtle intellect and yet it's as blatant as blunt force trauma. And it seems it could have been even more outrageous if McKay had been able to get his planned musical number into the final cut.

McKay brought in Oscar-nominated composer Nicholas Britell, which had Alabama Shakes singer Brittany Howard singing and Hamilton choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler directing the moves and it still didn't fit in the film, despite 15 different versions being tried. Apparently, nobody spending all of that money ever thought that a political satire probably didn't ever need a musical number...?
