10 Most Insulting Movie Sequels Ever
3. The Hangover Part III
Todd Philips may be better known for his Oscar nods than raunchy R-rated comedies these days, but some of us are old enough to recall when he was the reigning king of funny blockbusters. That reign came crashing to a halt with The Hangover’s misjudged threequel in 2015.
Making an inexplicable genre hop into thriller territory, The Hangover Part III ran far away from the bro-mantic comedy and goofy drunken antics which made the first film a classic upon its 2009 release. Instead the second sequel was mostly a grim, violent crime movie which happened to star Stu, Alan, and Phil.
The tone shift was a strange call to say the least, one which baffled audiences and critics alike, neither of whom responded positively. It’s not hard to see why—anyone expecting further adventures from the central trio were right to be disappointed by a film which featured four onscreen deaths, a decapitated giraffe, and an inexplicably convoluted heist storyline. We here at WhatCulture are glad Todd has since found a more fitting outlet for his darker side than raunchy blockbuster comedy sequels.
