4. Remy Gets Separated From His Family - Ratatouille
Remy and the rest of his rat colony live in an attic above an old woman’s house. But after Remy and Emile’s misadventure in the kitchen, the whole colony is exposed, and they’re forced to flee for their lives.
Remy ends up at the back of the group, desperately holding onto a cookbook, which he uses as a raft. He then narrowly avoids being taken out by a shotgun shell before entering a large pipe and taking a wrong turn.
The trauma of losing those closest to you is bad enough, but the nature of Remy’s separation makes everything worse. The turbulent current engulfs Remy. He’s submerged beneath the water again and again and struggles to breathe.
The absence of music is an interesting choice here. This, along with the occasional use of the first-person perspective, puts the audience right in the middle of the action, forcing us to listen to Remy’s groans and gasps as he’s continuously thrust through the water.
This little sequence only lasts about 30 seconds, but it’s easily the most intense moment in the film.
