10 Most Intense War Movies Ever Made

3. Enemy At The Gates

Black Hawk Down 2001
Paramount

Enemy At The Gates offers one of the most realistic insights into the just how the USSR ended the war with the highest deaths to percentage of population.

The film opens with the preamble to the Battle of Stalingrad.

Focusing on Vasily Zaitsev (Jude Law), we see that the Russian soldiers are told that one person will be holding the rifle and another will be holding the ammo due to shortages.

Vasily finds himself holding an ammo cartridge, and so he must charge directly at the German line with nothing to defend himself with. The Russians are unceremoniously slaughtered by both the Germans and by their own commanders after they attempt to retreat.

The following scene is the inspiration for the famous 'Vendetta' mission in Call of Duty: World at War.

Vasily collects a sniper rifle and picks off no fewer than 5 German soldiers as he and Commisar Danilov escape.

After the fame of Vasily's ability blossoms in both the Soviet Union and Germany, the Nazis deploy their own expert marksman in Erwin Konig.

The rest of the film acts as several close encounters between Vasily and Konig. Tensions continue to build throughout as Konig kills many of Vasily's allies and friends.
