10 Most Intense War Movies Ever Made
4. 1917
At the time of writing 1917 is just 5 months old but we can already tell it's going to be a favourite for war film buffs for years to come.
Shot and edited expertly to give the sense that the entire film is done in one long take, 1917 is about Lance Corporals William Schofield and Tom Blake.
They are tasked with delivering a vital message to the Second Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment: the Germans are planning a mass artillery strike that could wipe out the whole regiment. For added tension, Tom Blake's brother, Joseph, is a member of said regiment.
The pair are forced to cross the deadly no man's land of the French trenches to travel through the now-abandoned German trenches.
The tension builds as they journey through France as both the characters and the viewers are aware that they are getting closer and closer to the frontline.
Tom is sadly killed when they attempt to rescue a German pilot and William is forced to travel on alone.
In an absolutely incredible shot towards the end of the film, William is forced to charge across the top of the trench just as a charge toward the enemy is beginning.
Gunshots and explosion ring out all around him as he attempts to deliver this vital message.
