10 Most Intense Western Duels Ever
8. Young Guns (1988)
Young Guns is one of those movies that came out when westerns were somewhat passé, but that hardly mattered given the way this movie simply worked. The film starred Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Charlie Sheen, Dermot Mulroney, Casey Siemaszko, Terence Stamp, Terry O'Quinn, Brian Keith, and Jack Palance.
This movie was full of gunfights, many of which were historically accurate, while others were greatly sensationalized. The very best of them was the final scene in the movie, which featured a shootout between Billy the Kid and his gang of Regulators against soldiers of the U.S. Army and Murphy's men who served as the principal antagonist of the movie.
While they are holed up in a house in a clear no win scenario, they defy the odds and fight back by picking off Murphy's men and assaulting their attackers in a way that makes no tactical sense whatsoever.
When the dust settles, the 'good guys' are left standing and everyone the audience cares about was able to get away. Not everyone survived, but enough made it to the credits to get a sequel made. Ultimately, the scene ends in the best way possible with Billy returning on horseback just so he could take out Murphy with a well-placed shot right between the eyes.
