10 Most Irritatingly Improbable Sports Movies

8. The Cutting Edge

D2 The Mighty Ducks
MGM

This movie has a lot of flaws. The director had no concept of how to shot skating sequences to the point that about half the film looks like a blurry MTV music video, and both of the lead characters are sort of patently unlikeable.

Kate is an uptight, snobbish figure skater whose competitiveness and acidic sense of humor have sent every potential skating partner running for the hills. It really doesn't make any sense that someone with her personality isn't just a singles skater, but that's neither here nor there.

At any rate, they end up recruiting Doug Dorsey, a big old lummox of a hockey player whose NHL dreams were dashed by an injury that cost him most of his peripheral vision. Something you might also need in pairs figure skating, where you have to be synced up to a person in your periphery with pinpoint accuracy, but whatever.

The biggest issue is simply that the idea of a hockey player could learn everything about figure skating to the point of being able to compete at an Olympic level in less than two years is honestly one of the most offensive things committed to celluloid. No, that isn't an overreaction.
